INCH is not the place to go for rental assistance, emergency food, homeless services, mental health counseling, drug abuse help, or problems with family violence. Still, people needing this assistance call the INCH telephone number. They do not know where to turn. We are an InterFaith Network for Community Help. We can answer the phone and seek to provide comfort, guidance, and the beginnings of some access to help in the community. The times demand that we do this in part with the community itself, simply because there is no other place to turn. The agencies are cutting staff, and the staff they retain are overwhelmed. The agencies never had enough resources for the need, and those resources are being cut, now, further... The people in need do not know where to turn, and that disability is a further part of the need, and of the helplessness. Let us build a small group to provide telephone numbers, guidance, and some fellowship. We now answer the phone and read from the Community Information Handbook put out by San Mateo County Human Services. That is a start. |
